“Very Spursy signing” – Darren Bent comments on rumoured club target

Former Tottenham man, Darren Bent has labelled rumoured target Weston McKennie as a “very Spursy signing” amid speculation going into this summer’s transfer window.

Football Insider have linked Spurs with a potential summer swoop for the USA international who has attracted the interest from other Premier League high flyers.

Schalke are currently struggling financially following the COVID-19 pandemic and are expected to be forced into offloading some of their talent in order to balance the books.

Spurs have been advised that they could secure the services of the 21-year-old for £20m this summer but will face competition from a number of other clubs.

“It’s cheap enough for them to do it as well. We know the Coronavirus has hit people hard, we understand that, but at the same time he is a very Spursy signing, very, very Spursy,” Bent told Football Insider.

“The money’s got to be right and at £20million, you’d think it’s not that much, especially in today’s market. In today’s modern football and the transfer market, that’s not too much money, it’s very doable.”

McKennie has been a huge influence for Schalke as the versatile midfielder is more than capable of dropping deep into the defensive role and even defence itself – much like Eric Dier.

The 21-year-old has featured 28 times in the Bundesliga for Schalke this season and scored three times in those appearances (Transfermarkt).

I think Spurs would only really go for McKennie if we miss out on Hojbjerg from Southampton. However, he has impressed in the Bundesliga for Schalke and they are struggling for cash at the minute, given the worldwide financial problems.
