Winks fears World Cup heartbreak

Harry Winks fears his ankle problem could rule him out of the World Cup.

His game time in recent months has continually been hampered by a persistent ankle injury, which he first suffered at the end of last season.

Mauricio Pochettino has been cautious with Winks and will continue to be so due to his fitness concerns. The young star exploded onto the international scene last year, performing brilliantly in his England debut against Lithuania in October.

However it’s been all change this season and he now faces an anxious wait to discover whether he is called up for England’s friendlies with Holland and Italy when Gareth Southgate names his squad on Thursday, and considering his game time in recent weeks seems unlikely.

Winks is not the only player in doubt, after Harry Kane was left on crutches following an ankle injury suffered in Sunday’s win at Bournemouth and we await anxiously on the results of scans due once swelling has subsided. There were reports yesterday that he faced seven weeks on the sidelines which hadn’t been confirmed by the club.

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. If his progress has been hampered by a lingering ankle injury then that’s far more concerning
than simply a halt in his progress. But Winks was magnificent in some big games 4 months ago,
including the Real Madrid games. I tend to think that Dembele’s recent form has kept Winks out,
rather than a lingering injury, but when Winks HAS appeared, he hasn’t looked anything like the midfielder he was before, and when he got his England caps.
I still believe in this lad’s potential. If that injury from over a year ago has somehow become influential in
his recent form, then time must be taken to address it. We had a ready made replacement for Dembele in Winks, and now we’re worrying the boy’s gone backwards (for whatever reason). I would hate him to end up as another Tom Carroll.
