‘Big asset’ – New Spurs youth signing was tipped for ‘big future’ by old manager last year

New Tottenham youth signing Tyrell Ashcroft was backed to have a ‘big future’ ahead of him by former Reading manager Veljko Paunovic.

Spurs confirmed the acquisition of 17-year-old Ashcroft last week alongside Irish goalkeeper Josh Keeley, who are both expected to link up with the club’s Under-21 outfit for the new season.

Berkshire Live claim the versatile defender was one of several youth players to have been offered fresh terms by Reading, although he opted for a move to the Premier League club instead.

A regular in the Royals’ Under-23 side, Ashcroft broke through to the first team last season and managed to make his debut against Millwall in November (Transfermarkt).

While Spurs will be hoping a similar breakthrough can be made for them, there will be undoubted disappointment at Reading after losing an academy graduate tipped for a promising career.

Former manager Paunovic, who left Reading in February, previously heaped plenty of praise on Ashcroft and predicted him to be a top asset going forward after his breakthrough last term.

He told Berskire Live last year: “He is a fantastic lad, young, confident and has quality. He has an engine and is a very intelligent kid, so he has it all.

“I think he has a big future for our club. He is a big asset so we have to keep nourishing his talent and provide him with the best possible support so he can keep growing.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Ashcroft seemed to be pretty highly rated at Reading and it looks as though Spurs have picked up a very promising player this summer.

Hopefully, he will be able to keep his upward trajectory going with the Spurs youth team, which has produced some excellent talent over the years.
