Mauricio Pochettino defends performance of Tottenham player

Tottenham Hotspur manager, Mauricio Pochettino, claims that Eric Dier enjoyed a very good game at centre-back yesterday against Sheffield United.

Dier was given the nod as part of a back central defensive pairing for the second time in a week, partnership Davinson Sanchez both in Belgrade and at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The England international was booked very early on in the game and never seemed to settle after that, giving away fouls and possession all game long.

Pochettino was later forced to introduce Juan Foyth as a third centre-back to sure things up in an effort to defend Tottenham’s 1-0 lead.

However, Sheffield managed to put the ball in the back of the net twice, with the first being ruled out for offside despite Dier looking close to playing Lundstram onside.

Despite Dier’s pretty woeful display at the back, it seems as if his manager is still backing him and rated his performance.

Poch said (Football London): “You know, it’s difficult. You know I was a centre-back and I loved to play with a yellow card from the beginning. In the first 10 minutes, I always received a yellow card and then played better, more relaxed. But I think Eric had a very good game. In this action it was an action that I explained before where we struggled a bit in the first half, all the first balls and all the second balls were for them. They were more aggressive and more focused.

“We were a little bit sloppy and in this action, he was trying to cover down the side and of course made the foul and it was too much the yellow card in the first minute of the game. I thought he handled it very well for the 90 minutes with the yellow card.”
