What Pochettino said after the Man City fiasco

Tottenham may have suffered their heaviest defeat this evening since the 5-1 loss at Newcastle United on the final day of the 2015/16 season, but Mauricio Pochettino once again did not throw his players under the bus.

It was a diabolical, lacklustre, toothless display from Tottenham against Manchester City. Granted, City are in fine form at the moment, but to lose 4-1 in the manner we did was totally unacceptable.

I’d like to think that one shred of hope would be that Daniel Levy and co will spend some money in January to close the gap between us and the likes of City in terms of squad depth and quality, but we know that won’t happen. Levy will be using the stadium costs as an excuse instead.

Pochettino’s comments below are mild. What on earth does he mean by an ‘unbelievable experience?’. I guess we’re going to have to wait for Poch’s follow-up novel for his real thoughts as he has once again bottled it.

“I think first of all, the better team won. When you watch the game and you assess the game and the way we conceded the first goal was a massive gift for Manchester City,” said Pochettino.

“It changed completely all that you compare and wanted to develop on the pitch. They are in a very good form and momentum. They are showing why they are the best in the Premier League.

“Different things happened, of course the second half we started well and were still alive in the game. I think the chance that we had with Harry Kane was key. Maybe if we scored then, things change because we dominated Manchester City in the first 20 minutes in the second half.”

He added: “But at 2-0 it looks difficult again because when you give a lot of space to Sterling, Sane, Aguero, Jesus or De Bruyne you have unbelievable quality in all the transition, but of course then you need some luck.

“The chance with Harry Winks and the penalty maybe change the game, but in the end 4-1 is a result that is so disappointing. Of course you cannot say anything positive, because that is the mentality of football.

“But for me, you can take some positives from the unbelievable experience for the team to realise that to play for the Premier League we need to improve, we need to learn, to work harder than before and of course we play again today a team that has a lot of quality.”
