Lewis holtby

I like the look of him. I think he will be rotated with Eriksen in the playmaker role.

I don't think we've seen anything like what this kid can do yet.  Some players take time to settle and he's had some bedding in time now.  I just hope he gets enough minutes this year, we've wasted players with potential before like this, when they had a part to play and could develop into great players.  I mean Harry nearly blew it with Bale.

The lad's talent has to be respected and AVB is bright so I expect him to give him enough of a chance.

I expect Holtby to be one of the 'surprises' of the season.  He showed glimpses of pure class last year, but was clearly struggling to adapt at the time.  Any guy that is said to have carried the German under 21's is a potential world beater.  I really like his attitude as well, he's determined to succeed with a winning mentality (typical German international).

His start in the Europa league was very encouraging, he can see and deliver a pass and score a goal and has great energy.

I don't expect him to play in the box to box midfield role, even though he clearly has the work rate to do it.  But those spots are pretty much nailed down by specialists like Paulinho and Dembele.  I think it is Sandro and Capoue to rotate the holding role, box to box role as mentioned and playmaker between Eriksen and Holtby.

Maybe Lamela might be used at no. 10 on occasion as well and likewise maybe Holtby might be used on occassion in the box to box role.  But that is what I expect this year.

One of the greatest problems I see with managers is a lack of foresight and courage to use talented (and often younger) players and give them enough game time to develop.  However, I don't think AVB has that problem!

Totally agree about Holtby, really like the look of him. Don't think Dembele should be considered anything but a squad player now though,he has not improved AT ALL. It's ok floating past 3players like they're not there but that's where it ends,he has entirely nothing else!

has to play in the number 10 role, that's what he did at Schalke and also does for German U-21's. Any of you who saw the game Germany U21 v Netherlands U-21 will know he was epic, totally controlled the game, scored a great goal and won a penalty. I'd rather have him in 10 than Dembele, but also Eriksen has a part to play too. A quandry for AVB but a nice one to have!

I don't think he has shone for us like he does for his national team, but when he clicks and fully settles, he could be like a new signing for us all over again. I rate him highly but, like Siggy, I don't think he will get a lot of games this season.

I think Siggy's days are numbered at spurs myself.  I don't think he's got enough in his locker.  He was too one-paced out wide and he doesn't really create enough centrally.  I'd say Siggy will be a good midtable player and he might even develop from there but I don't think he's got much of a future here now to be honest.

I think Holtby's a level higher myself and potential to be a world beater.

Dembele still got  chance, IMO, he just needs to fight for its place, but I agree on Siggy. Nice guy, he scored a few important goals, but it's not with him in the first team that we can get into the top 4

I think that's harsh on Dembele.  He had a bit of dip in form around Christmas last year and the start of this season, but the rest of the time I think he's been excellent.  He's very athletic and wins a lot of ball and is a great ball carrier with a nice pass.  True he doesn't score nearly enough goals but I think he's a really good box to box player myself.  Don't underestimate how effective he is for us at what he does.  The ability to beat players at will and rarely lose it while dribbling incisively is lethal at times and he was the springboard and creative force behind so much of our attacks last year, usually right after he gobbled up an opponent in a tackle.

He's not Modric but he has qualities Modric wouldn't have too.  And like Modric he beats players well and plays nice one twos.  I watched him play in person last year with Sandro against Swansea at home and they were very impressive as a pair.  I don't think he should be shouldering our lack of creativity the way he does.  We didn't replace Modric and VDV until this year.  The main midfield creativity will come from Eriksen, Holtby and Lamela this year supplemented by Paulinho, Dembele and to an extent Sandro and Capoue as well.  Dembele is not a playmaker, he's a ball winner, an athlete and a class dribbler.

I agree Dembele needs to add more in the final third, but I like him a lot as a box to box man.  I think he'll have a big role to play this year in rotation with Paulinho and he will probably be mainly second choice because Paulinho seems to have the goals and assists Dembele needs to add to his game to be world class.

Dembele could also be useful as a wide man if needed, he used to play there and we know he can go past people at will.  I personally thought we struggled the most last year when he was missing, even more than when Bale was injured, because there was no other midfielder good enough for that crucial role of box to box and linking the play up!  At least when Bale was gone we still had some of what he did with Lennon.  When Dembele was out it was like the heart of the team was ripped out.  Although in fairness when both Bale and Lennon were out we were totally toothless because we had no wingers and played Dempsey and Siggy, who are totally one-paced.  That was arguably as bad or worse.

The thing is I see him go past people so easy it's a pleasure to watch, but then nothing. When he played for Fulham he was excellent, got goals, looked a playmaker, and made them tick.Maybe I'm being a bit harsh but he just don't seem the same player.

I think Dembele is still learning how to play deeper to be honest, he's a bit of a mish mash of styles.  He played most of his life as a wide man or forward. But he's so talented and has so much that is valuable that I think it would be a big mistake to cast him aside.  He's so hard to play against physically and does things many central midfielders couldn't dream of doing and can take out a midfield in one swoop and drop of the shoulder.  That's awesome, but yea, as you say he needs to build on it.  The competition for places should help us in many ways this year!

Yeah that's true, the competition for places should give a few of our (before untouchable) players a bit of a rocket this season, particularly Lennon,Siggy and Dembele, lets hope they can step up a few gears and give us something to celebrate at the end of the season!

I do agree that Holtby's a very good player and underused at the moment. But he's not a number 10 IMO, he's a proper CM that can do anything, pass, tackle, dribble, technically sound, great movement, plays inbetween the lines and has the vital ingredient passion.

If you want to play the number 10 role you have to be productive as a goalscorer and assisting the team. Holtby isn't that kind of player for me and better suited from deep where he can control the game. Sadly I can't see him featuring as often as he should.

But what formation are we going to play? That's a key question that Holtby should be asking.

Have to make a last point regarding Bale and Harry. I don't think Harry nearly missed a trick with Bale. Bale at that time was out of form, had no confidence, more worried about his hair, kept rolling around moaning and couldn't defend to save his life. Forrest came in for him, Harry and the club told Bale to it's up to him personally whether he wants to go out on loan. Bale choose to stay. Filled in at left back, won a game, Harry then moved him to left wing and he hasn't looked back.

Bale only has himself to blame, he even came out a week or so back speaking glowingly about Harry and helping him develop as a player.

Dembele is a class player but like many others on here have said he doesn't know his role. When he played next to sandro he was class. Had great chat with lads at training tonight and there is such a problem as too many players at spurs right now. The issue I have is capoue, sandro Pauline and dembele, one too many in my opinion. Id like to see holtby next to dembele or sandro as it's more attacking with holby deeper. Eriksen is your nailed on 10, I can either capoue or sandro as it's like for like, but in my opinion the squad is too top heavy in midfield when a lb was essential and a rb in my opinion as walker is shocking. I was embaressed watching him last night out of position all the time. Wtf are AVB and Gary Neville working on with him?

I love how we sign great players and then, a season or two later, they need to be moved on because they are not quite good enough. It shows that we are developing and improving year on year. I agree that Siggy and even Dembele may not be quite up to the mark now and that has to be a great thing for us

scored 14 goals in 24 appearances playing as a number 10 for the German U-21's! Not a bad return if you ask me

Holtby also scored in Europa league this year already with his wrong foot and laid on a goal from the no. 10 position.  I think he'll be a new man this year, one year older and used to the league.  I do think he can play both no 10 or box to box but he won't get many chances deeper imo because we already have those positions nailed down.

I do think Harry missed a trick with Bale.  It is on record he tried to move him on for £3m to Birmingham and asked people to try to find him a new club on a permanent basis.

In all fairness, people can say what they want about him liking his hair and so on, but the fact is Bale was always a player that should have played.  You play talent, that's how they learn and tougin up or play less unselfishly or what ever they need to do.  If after a long spell of playing in your team in the right position, if they still have big faults then ship them on or drop them for a spell.  That was Fergie's whole philosophy with talent.  Not giving them room to grow at all is dumbass and Harry was at times.  Harry would have probably not played Ronaldo at united for the first few years when he was doing not much more than diving and whinging and hitting row z with free kicks and he may have never developed near what he is.  For two years people said he might not fill Beckham's boots!  You see it all the time.

You can talk about Harry's positive qualities and he does have them, but he very much lacks foresight and evolving to the game.  He's very rigid in his policies of what he expects of players.  Short back and sides, black boots etc.  (I'm not being totally literal) which is fine, and I like that too, but you need to have more faith in talent.

He criminally underused Bale, Gio and Taarabt at certain stages.  They should have been given the chance to flourish.  And Bale's record was only spectacular under AVB because he was then used to the full.  He's developed a lot later than the players of similar ilk because of this.

Harry failed to recognise what Gio and Adel were as well and never played them in the right position, even when those positions were weak.  You can stick Gio right midfield all you want and you'll never get a performance.  He's a centre forward or inside right forward.  They are not Bale but they could easily be top players with the right encouragement, coaching and faith.  Gio played well last year and moved for £7.5m.  It's great to see him finally getting his career off the ground because at spurs he only got a chance for Mexico, he was played up top and performed.

Also, I went to a game last year between QPR and Fulham.  Taarabt ran the game start to finish and scored a magnificent goal.  He was so far ahead of anyone on the pitch it was untrue (except for Berbatov when he bothered to move a leg).  Everyone at that game said they'd have paid £150 just to watch Adel play that day.  That's what the game is all about really, seeing something worth watching.

I remember hearing guys saying that they wouldn't sell him back to spurs now for less than £15m and that he'd go to a club with bigger budget anyway.  Harry ended up ruining the kid AGAIN, took him out and let him wither when he was really starting to bloom at a high level.  Don't tell me Harry did everthing right, far from it.  Just a good manager with limitations.

His record for his previous was 1 in 5. From what I've seen personally, he's much better suited to playing as a CM, whilst Eriksen looks a more natural AM.

I know Dembele is a quality player but for me this is what we bought and wanted from him and i just have not seen enough of this. This Dembele walks into our team but he's not recaptured any sort of form like this for us imo which is disappointing

Came off the bench today in the no. 10 role and was superb, and Lamela had flashed of pure class as well.  Great to have this quality in depth, players that can come on and change the game!

He was brilliant, passed the ball quicker and looked awesome.

We will need Holtby more and more this season. I agree, he's better as CM, but he likes to push forward and will get his goals as well. It's amazing how good we look already, and several players are still settling.

We need to be patient with Lamela, because at some point this season he will be lethal

I can see a few players getting into double figures this year (Eriksen, Lamela, Holtby if he plays more, and Paulinho)

The guy's attitude is immense, really loves it here, playing for us and following in the footsteps of his idol Jurgen, he clearly has a keen football brain and picks the right - penetrating - pass more often then not. Extremely impressed with him and hope to see more of it.
