European Super league

I'm not sure how this Super League will work. Does it mean Spurs will leave the EPL? Is it just 12 teams playing each other, say 4 times - 2 at home and 2 away. Having to travel to another country every other game for away matches?

Or does it mean they stay in their Premier league and drop out of Cup competitions and playing only in the their league plus their own 12 team Cup competition?

I can't see Fifa Uefa and the FA agreeing to letting them stay in their Premier League plus run their own Super League.

If the Super League is a league outside of the footballing world, I can't see it working.

Another thought. Have the players in these clubs been consulted? What happens if the players currently with these clubs don't want to switch to the Super League? It will almost certainly mean the internationals will never be able to play in the European and World Cups. Would Harry, for instance give up playing for England? Would future players want to join a super league club?

When will this new League start - next season or the one after?

There are an awful lot of obstacles to overcome and I think any proposals to start a new rival league outside of the current set up would fail.

It might only be a slender hope, but there seems to be a chance it will not happen.

What is the proposed format?

The league will have 20 teams - the 12 founding members plus the three unnamed clubs they expect to join soon and five sides who qualify annually according to their domestic achievements. It will start in August, with midweek fixtures, and the clubs will be split into two groups of 10, who play each other home and away. The top three in each group qualify for the quarter-finals, with the teams in fourth and fifth playing a two-legged play-off for the two remaining spots. From then, on it will have the same two-leg knockout format used in the Champions League before a single-leg final in May at neutral venue.

They hope to begin the competition in August of this year.

One big question is can the Super League still go ahead if the clubs are penalised by the FA, UEFA and FIFA by being thrown out of their domestic league, European cup competitions, world cups and players refused international recognition ??. An even bigger question is can the governing bodies afford to throw out these 15 top clubs and expect to carry on without them ?

The website is up and running

( https://thesuperleague.com/ ), the teams are named and the ruling body members have been declared...they are challenging the FA, UEFA and FIFA to do their worst if they dare. It's a risky call to make but one they have obviously weighed up and decided to go ahead with.

I’m sure this new super league have an army of super lawyers at their beck and call.

I don't believe the clubs will be excluded from local championships. FA is FA, nothing changes. They will not be part of UCL or Europa League.

It looks like it’s happening,I mean if Everton or wolves or even Celtic or rangers were offered a seat at Europe’s top table would they take it with the money being thrown around, you bet your sweet ass they would.

I think the lawyers are going to get rich with this.

The FA will be furious over this. I can see them trying to make things difficult for EPL teams taking one of the 5 domestic places. They already will have to promote 6 clubs next season to replace those leaving. Then every year replace any clubs being part of the 5 domestic clubs who get a place Obviously the 15 clubs will not have a system whereby they could be relegated, so the 5 who go up will only get 1 year in the super league.

The FA may say that any EPL club that takes up a domestic spot will not automatically get back into the EPL as that takes away a promotion spot into the EPL that will ripple down through the leagues. I don't see how they can get around this problem.

I think that Fifa, Uefa and the FA will impose severe punishments on the clubs and players for setting off in this league and there will be lengthy court room battles and I can't see that being resolved in the next 3 months.

The more I find out about this utterly selfish idea, the angrier I get. I want THFC to be a top European club. If this Super League takes off, my conscience won't allow me to carry on supporting Spurs. I don't care if they became the top team in Europe if they have got there by shitting on all the other clubs in the UK who are in some way affected by this.

so Brentford have won the Carabao cup then as the final surely now wont be played on Sunday?

PSG have won the Champions League as the other contenders are in this ESL so must surely be excluded immediately . well done Poch you done it mate

Leicester have won the FA cup as surely Chelsea are thrown out immediately, Leicester likely to win the double then, else West Ham win the league as Mancs must be excluded immediately

Seriously authorities, do it, take the action, kick them out, do it, dont just threaten in, kick the six out of the national game, ban all their players who remain from international teams ban the clubs forever from now immediately from everything

Levy drop dead

Tbh who is gonna be able to afford to watch this lot live ????

i believe the 6 epl sides will have to make a hard decision,,,cos the should be ejected from the prem,,,the fa cup ,,league cup ,,also the other European comps ,,,,UEFA have already said that all players that take part in this super league will be not be able to play for there national teams .

now spurs are one off the most expensive season tickets in the epl ,,,,if they stay in this super league no normal working man on the street would be able to afford a ticket for one match let alone a season ticket ,,,so no Covid and still an empty stadium,,,I will go to watch cambridge Utd ,,,it’s very very sad ,,an ongoing history of a club formed in 1882 will die very painfully and slowly gutted

Burton who are my local team were bottom after a dozen or so games but are now mid  table. With entry price and car park it will only cost between £22 and £25 so that will be my  team.

Come on Burton Albion. LOL

I hope spurs jump ship get out while the goings good ,,,the government are gonna smash this lot to peices,,,there license for hosting matches would cost a fortune ,,,they would to have to provide there own policing of matches and all medical staff which is paid for by the public ( us) at the moment and there taxes would also increase through the roof ,,,,and the policing is not just inside the ground it’s the whole lot outside also your own firbrigade ,,,away teams travel will have to be policed,,the train stations,,,the tubes ,,,the pubs lol

I really hope spurs and Man City jump ship now ,,,,scary stuff is happening,,,also I was thinking if this goes ahead ,,,I would put money on another spurs team starting around that area ( a Salford City thing ) ,,,also these billionaire owners maybe never thought about the government’s getting involved ,,they might own there stadiums but you don’t own the land you don’t hold any power over these people,,,and the players they don’t own them a lot of players might not wanna be part of this ,,they might wanna play in world cups and European championship aswell

Assuming this isn’t just a ruse from the teams to win concessions from UEFA around the revised CL model, then ultimately I suspect the 6 clubs will just be allowed to stay in the Prem, and take part in all completions that they can realistically enter.

The ramifications of kicking the big6 out of the prem are huge... losses of income, sponsors, TV contracts torn up etc.

The whole thing is an epic omni-shambles.

No ruse fella ,,,but the clubs wants there cakes and eat it ,,,if they are allowed to play esl,,,,the prem league and champs league ,,,fa cup,,,etc etc become secondary,,,no full teams would start in those comps ,,,the new super league takes priority

but the government won’t let the big six (so called ) use any of the public services they use now for super league matches they would have to pay for it themselves,,let’s say 1000 police men ,,,,,st johns ambulance services,,,all medics ,,,,and they would have to pay higher taxes ,,,,,and the permits that the government give out to hold matches would become very difficult to get if you haven’t provided all off the above ,,,,remember there will always be hooligans from opposing sides these clubs would be responsible for that on super league match days which would be midweek evenings ,,,policing airports,,train stations,,,tubes stations,,    They don’t realise what they might be in for ,,,,,last champs league match Liverpool at home to Madrid,,,there bus got attacked yes ,,,,just think if ya didn’t have that policed right on super league night ,,,,carnage

Unfortunately, the clubs only pay for the police stationed inside the area defined by the club's safety certificate. Policing outside the grounds has always been paid for by the taxpayer.

That won't happen - clubs only pay for the police inside the stadium footprint. The police are mandated to maintain order in all public places.
