Opinion: Three players Jose Mourinho should axe at Tottenham Hotspur

Jose Mourinho is still putting his stamp on Tottenham Hotspur. Despite taking over on the 20th of November and having a transfer window to sign and sell players, Mourinho will need a full offseason to build his team in north London. Spurs fans are preparing for the team’s Champions League last-16 match with RB Leipzig and debating whether or not Mourinho’s men can win the tie. Supporters can use this code to receive bet bonuses before wagering on the team they believe will win the first leg.

Although Mourinho will have managed around three quarters of the season by the time it ends in May, he cannot be fully judged until the end of the 2020-21 season. By then, Mourinho will have had the chance to mould the squad.

The January transfer window saw Mourinho and company clear out want-away midfielder Christian Eriksen. Fullbacks Danny Rose and Kyle Walker-Peters also left Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on loans. Mourinho has some big personnel decisions coming up this summer and these three players should be axed at Tottenham Hotspur.

Victor Wanyama

Midfielder Victor Wanyama hasn’t been in the Spurs squad since the 28th of September when the team faced Southampton at home. Wanyama’s welcome has been worn out in north London and is on borrowed time after failing to secure a transfer away to Club Brugge last August due personal terms. Wanyama has played in just four matches this season and with his contract expiring in 2021, Tottenham must get rid of the Kenyan international in the offseason. Mourinho has left Wanyama out of the club’s Champions League squad further showing he is not needed or wanted. Serge Aurier

Right-back Serge Aurier may be the team’s first-choice at the position, but the defender has always looked shaky. Aurier arrived in 2017 from Paris Saint-Germain, who were all too excited to sell the right-back. He had had issues at the Parc des Prince insulting former manager Laurent Blanc and teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Aurier also assaulted a Parisian police officer while playing at PSG. On the pitch, Aurier has shown himself to be clumsy and a poor decision maker. It was Aurier’s tackle that conceded a penalty to Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero that Hugo Lloris fortunately saved. According to one pundit, Aurier is being targetted by opposing teams due to his poor defensive capabilities.

Moussa Sissoko

Moussa Sissoko isn’t getting any younger nor is he becoming less injury-prone. The 30-year-old midfielder has played 20 times this season in the league but is currently sidelined following knee surgery. Sissoko’s contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium runs until 2023. The problem for Sissoko is the number of players now in front of him in the pecking order. The issue for Mourinho is Sissoko cannot be counted on to stay fit. The quality is there, but if Sissoko cannot play due to injury, Mourinho must look at signing an alternative. At the moment, Sissoko has missed 16 games in the last two seasons due to injury.
