£10m release clause scares Napoli off AVB

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis wanted Andre Villas-Boas to become their new boss, according to Goal.com

The Serie A side were looking to replace Walter Mazzarri and AVB was top of De Laurentiis’ shopping list until he gained knowledge that the Spurs boss has a £10million buyout clause in his contract.

After learning of the news, De Laurentiis immediately turned his attention to the outgoing interim Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez who was confirmed as their new man on Monday after penning a two-year deal.

At 35, AVB is regarded as one of Europe’s brightest young managers and Spurs fans want him to continue what he has started at the Lane.

De Laurentiis recently admitted that he had approached Villas-Boas before going ahead with the Benitez appointment: “Yes,” De Laurentiis told Portuguese daily Diario de Noticias.

“There is a very tempting argument to hire a young coach here.”
