Dawson: I thought we had qualified for Champions League football

Michael Dawson admitted that he thought Gareth Bale’s last minute winner against Sunderland had put Tottenham into next season’s Champions League.

In a heartbreaking day, Arsenal scraped a 1-0 win at Newcastle United courtesy of a fortunate Laurent Koscielny header which was offside that proved to be enough for us to miss out on Champions League football by a point.

The Spurs captain assumed that the celebrations among the White Hart Lane faithful earlier in the match was due to the result at St James’ Park going in our favour.

He told Sky Sports News: “Yeah, I thought that was it (Spurs were in top four) because of the (earlier) celebrations around the ground from our fans.

“I didn’t hear anything else, then towards the end after Gaz scored I sort of picked things up that the fans weren’t as lively as we would’ve liked if we’d been in the top four, and you sort of got that feeling towards the end of the game.”

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. It wasnt a header, it was a voley. And he was no where near offside. Il give it to you that we scraped the win though.

  2. We’re all gutted, but let’s get the facts straight. ARSEnal’s goal was a volley scored from a perfectly good onside position. They finished the business end of the season better than us. Again. No excuses – fact! We have spent more money, too! Sell Bale and buy a team. We’re one bad tackle against Stoke away from mid table!!!!!
