New Europa League award gives competition a meaning

The Europa League winners will qualify for the Champions League from the 2015/16 season, UEFA have confirmed.

UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino announced the rule change which aims to make the second-tier European tournament more attractive to clubs.

Infantino did not confirm the full details, but it is understood that Europa League winners and Champions League winners will no longer take a place from the domestic leagues if they finish outside of the Champions League qualifying spots.

Hopefully by 2015/16 we’ll qualify directly to the Champions League rather than rely on the hope of winning the Europa League!

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. UEFA totally devalue this competition themselves by allowing the flops from the champions league groups to be parachuted into the competition at the turn of the year

  2. I think the rule of the 3rd placed team in the CL "drops" into the EL is very wrong – I've seen it stated that this is a reward for failure – is that rule changing too??
