Former Spur retires at 30

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Ahmed ‘Mido’ Hossam has decided to hang up his boots.

The Egyptian international who is 30 decided to pack it in after being without a club since January when he departed Championship outfit Barnsley after making just one appearance.

Mido joined us on an 18-month loan deal in January 2005 and scored a brace on his debut against Portsmouth. After a successful loan spell he made the move permanent in August in a €6.75 million deal from Roma. He didn’t manage to find the same success in front of goal after signing his permanent deal and was sold to Middlesbrough in August 2007.

Here are his top 10 goals from his career. What is your most memorable moment of Mido?

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. This is a player who had a lot of natural ability, but somewhere along the way it all went horribly wrong! When he was on loan at Spurs, he looked like he'd go on to become a great striker… sadly, once we signed him full time he probably didn't put the same effort in, or things happened behind the scenes to effect him. It is a shame, as I liked Mido and at 30 it's not beyond him to get his fitness back, but perhaps his desire to play the game has gone, much like Michael Owen and once that happens there's no real way back.

  2. Mido was quality for us had a great partnership with keane was pushed out for berbatov who was on another level but mido was frozen out by jol and he never really recovered.Sad he had so much ability i was there on his debut when he got a double vs pompey. All the best mido you served us well.

  3. He might have been a fat useless b*st*rd but he was our fat useless b*st*rd?????? All jokes aside, it is a shame to read this. The boy had a lot of talent but liked to party too much. I remember seeing him turn out for some team on a ESPN game some years after he left Spurs and his weight had ballooned by that stage. I didn't think that was possible
