Player Ratings: Tottenham 1-0 Sunderland

The Lilywhites missed out on Champions League football next year despite a late victory at home to Sunderland in a game which Spurs dominated from the outset. Eventually, the win was sealed by another Gareth Bale wonder-strike, not too dissimilar from his winner at home to Southampton. It has been a tremendous season – 72 points despite the natural changes of a new manager – and whilst there is evident disappointment right now, it is clear that Spurs are on the up.

Hugo Lloris – 8

Didn’t put a foot wrong, made a couple of smart saves from Graham and Wickham and was comfortable at set pieces.

Kyle Walker – 6

Played well although he ultimately didn’t produce too much going forward. Not much defending to do.

Michael Dawson – 7

Strong against Graham and altogether led the team well, although he shouldn’t have let Graham past in one of the 1-on-1s.

Jan Vertonghen – 8

Brilliant as ever.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto – 5

Needs to be sold. Too much of a risk-taker and doesn’t offer as much as he used to offensively.

Scott Parker – 6

Not really a bad performance within his capabilities, but going forward, lacking as usual.

Tom Huddlestone – 7

Barely misplaced a pass and spread play well.

Aaron Lennon – 6

Saw plenty of the ball without ever creating too much with it, unlucky not to score in the period of the game where nothing was going in for us.

Gareth Bale – 8

Capped off a truly outstanding season with a truly outstanding goal, worthy of being the last goal of the season.

Clint Dempsey – 6

Worked hard without having that much of an impact.

Emmanuel Adebayor – 6

Led the line reasonably well, got involved and linked up with the midfield.

Mousa Dembele – 6

Didn’t have that much of an impact on the game.

Jermain Defoe – 5

Gylfi Sigurdsson – 5

Again, did nothing.

Whilst at this precise moment it might not feel like it, it has been a tremendous season for Spurs, with our record Premier League points tally. If we strengthen next year with a striker, a creative midfielder and a full-back, then I see no reason why we can’t challenge for greater honours than merely top 4.

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. Gylfi Sigurdsson – 5
    Again, did nothing.

What exactly was he supposed to do in the 10minutes he got. I thought a player had to play for 20minutes to be able to get ratings.

Dempsey was terrible, did nothing and should not have started the game.

  2. Levy is to blame for this mess!!! Failure to gain CL football and the extra revenue it brings can be placed squarely on Levy for not investing in a top striker in January!!!! Had we paid £20-25 million for Damiao last transfer window, we could surely be looking at his cost in return revenue for making the CL!!

    • To be honest I don't think we needed to even spend that much money. It would have been great if we had signed Damiao but any decent striker in the 10-15 mil range would have brought us a top 4 finish.
If you remember, Defoe was injured in January and the only other striker we had was Adebayor and we all know how well that decision turned out…

    • Lets put this to bed we scored the 5th best goals only failed to score against Fulham Home Wigan Home two teams who upped there work rate one with a top top striker. We scored against every team won record away games record points won a win at Utd . Now the reason we finished 5th in my honest opinion Firstly we lost key players and had key players not 100 percent fit Kaboul Sandro then Dembele playing outstanding till his hip problem flared up and every time he got a knock he went off. Then Defoe got injured hip and ankle ADY left for 6 weeks and then went awol Bale then got us out of jail and turned into a super striker. We then had a cup game every week with a squad getting smaller by the loan and injury trying to play Thursday and stay fresh against teams using supplements to up there work rate to stop us from playing. Our run in had tricky games every week and our extra game against Chelsea meanwhile Arsenal on the same supplements and out of Ufa where winning every week sometimes with ten men or pens or offside goals 8 1-0 games they won with a defense that was called weak.. Every time we climbed to the top we got pushed down Chelsea form rocketed like Magic no matter how many players he rotated a manager known to me from is Liverpool days. Our hearts where dragged nearly from our chest with Bale popping up with outstanding Goals to keep us in the Hunt then the Basle game came and went the dirtiest team in the competition according to states and we learned the hard way Bale Lennon Defoe Dembele all had knocks Lennon taking the last game to look like he could run in fact all four where carrying knocks till the last game. The two games that finally took away our chance of having our own destiny was Wigan full of running and Chelsea Hanging on with there mammoth schedule giving us a chance one we failed with Chech outstanding . We all no the rest letting Arsenal get to the lat day with a French love was the final straw in a lucky run in for Dr Wengers slim team the gods really shone on them or was it help from the Cartel Utd showed when the title was won they played in normal 5th gear the one we beat them in the first half. the Verdict our defense without Kaboul rotated to much we conceded 46 8th worse we scored 66 Goals better than City 5th best and Chelsea and Arsenal had big wins we had only one 4=0 we scored against every team we only won 2 games in the North west Stoke and Utd injury's small squad through loans rotating defense no passer till Huddlestone was brought back and Arsenal and Chelsea luk playing teams with nothing to gain except Wigan whose loan player Scharner helped Arsenal win the pivotal game and Newcastle Koschenly gift

  3. Credit to spuds for doing what you could today and being bale-d out again by your hero who will be leaving in the summer for a team playing champions league football.

I can only see spurs staying in their negative spiral of Thursday night football.

Bendtner and chamakh are available to strengthen your team this summer.

  4. Tom huddlestone barely misplaced a pass? Did you watch the same game? He was terrible. Lacklustre on the ball and bad passing for a guy who is lauded solely for that ability
