Pundit backs Spurs to get top four ahead of Liverpool and Newcastle for one reason

Ian Wright believes that Tottenham Hotspur will finish in the top four again this season, and it all comes down to the fact Harry Kane is scoring goals.

Tottenham currently occupy fourth place in the Premier League table with 48 points from 27 games. They have a four-point cushion over fifth-placed Newcastle United, who have two games in hand on the Lilywhites.

Liverpool are in sixth right now, with 42 points from 26 games. So, while Newcastle and Liverpool have more games to play, it is Spurs who have the points on the board and seemingly, the advantage in the Champions League race as it stands.

Antonio Conte’s side still need to visit Anfield and St James’ Park later this season, in what could prove to be crucial fixtures in the battle for the top four. However, former Arsenal striker Wright thinks Spurs have the key to winning that battle – Harry Kane.

Kane has scored 20 league goals already this season (Transfermarkt) and Wright believes the England captain will continue to add to this tally to secure Tottenham their place in the Champions League next year.

He told Premier League Productions (13/03/23 at 2:25 pm): “I think Tottenham are going to be okay simply because they have got Harry Kane. He’s going to score goals.”

“You look at Newcastle. They are missing chances. Yes, they scored a couple (against Wolves) and it was good for them, but they will have to do that with their two games in a hand. They have to score goals. I can’t see Tottenham not scoring goals,” Wright added.

Wright reflected on the current form of Eddie Howe and Jurgen Klopp’s sides, and suggested: “You can’t trust [Newcastle]. You can’t trust Liverpool. At the moment, whoever I am, playing against Liverpool, then I would have a go.”

“What it comes down to is that you have Harry Kane. For as long you have Harry Kane and you can create chances, then he is probably going to score them. This is why I will fancy Tottenham to make the top four, regardless of how they play,” he concluded.

Spurs Web Opinion

I really don’t know which way this is all going to go, because our form is just so inconsistent. But, Spurs are in a strong position right now, and I do think both Newcastle and Liverpool will drop points along the way.

If Spurs can just get a result against both, or either of them, then we will finish fourth.
