Spurs Line Up Benteke And Soldado After Missing Out On Striker Target

19

Disappointment this week as David Villa, believed by many to be on his way to Spurs, chose to join Atletico Madrid for substantially less than Spurs were reported to be willing to pay. That leaves a rather large striker sized hole in the Spurs squad still and there have been quite a few changes in the odds on certain strikers to be joining or not joining Spurs.

It seems that attentions have turned to Christian Benteke who put in a transfer request just hours after news broke that David Villa was staying in Spain. Spurs have been made the early favourites to sign another Belgian to play alongside Jan Vertonghen and Mousa Dembele despite reported interest from Chelsea and Liverpool amongst others. A price tag of £25m would seem too much for the ultra shrewd Daniel Levy yet Spurs are just 4/7 with some bookies to snap Benteke up before the transfer window closes and only as big as even money with one bookie. Spurs are deemed to be the only club capable of getting Benteke to move as Aston Villa are 3/1 to keep hold of their star man, ahead of Chelsea who are 5/1, Arsenal who are 8/1 and Liverpool at 12/1.

There aren’t really many options out there now for Spurs with no Champions League football to offer and a fairly strict wage structure and it seems the only other striker really in the pipeline is Valencia’s Roberto Soldado. Spurs are favourites to sign the Spaniard but the bookies aren’t as confident in Soldado as they are in Benteke as Spurs can be backed at 3/1 to pick up the man that was a member of the victorious Spanish Confederations Cup squad. Atletico Madrid are next best and they are 3/1 with one bookie and 8/1 with another which seems odd, both in the difference in odds and also because they’ve already signed David Villa.

If neither Benteke or Soldado fail to materialise then it could be another season of Adebayor and Defoe as the next best option seems to be going back in for Leandro Damiao but he’s now out to 11/1 to sign this summer and he’s odds on to join Napoli who are also the favourites to sign another reported Spurs target, Jackson Martinez.

Perhaps a couple of sales will loosen the purse strings for a big striker signing and first out of White Hart Lane could be Scott Parker who is just 1/5 to link up with former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp in the Championship. It seems the signing of Paulinho has made a few midfielders obsolete as Tom Huddlestone is just 8/13 to sign for Sunderland this transfer window. Sunderland are also in pole position to sign Danny Rose should he leave Spurs, the Black Cats are 2/1 favourites to secure the man they had on loan last season. Meanwhile Emmanuel Adebayor continues to be linked with a move away despite no signs of any replacements, he’s 6/4 to move to Besiktas this window but Jermain Defoe, who is 9/4 to join Stoke, looks to be staying put with bookies offering just 4/7 that he is a Spurs player next season.

Which striker do you want at Spurs and who is most likely to be leading the line next season out of the available players? Would Benteke or Soldado be enough to keep you happy? 1. Every transfer window we see Spurs linked to one class player or another, then , as each window passes the player never materialises. Question – Spurs board might 'talk the talk', but are they really a club with the pedigree to lure these 'special' players away?

  2. Whilst Levy's hard negotiating has benefited the club on some occasions, it has failed the club on many others. Hopefully the introduction of Baldini will change things a bit.

  3. Benteke!

Knows the EPL! Has acquitted himself well! Young and hungry! Has compatriots at the club!

Eager to impress. National coach too! Has the physicality to hold up the ball for our marauding Mf's!

Can score goals on the break! Potentially a good foil for Defoe! Or can lead the line on his own!

And! He wants to come to White Hart Lane!!

Pay the money Mr Levy! Get him in now, training, working with the squad and prepared and wearing a
Spurs shirt on the 18th of August!

    COYS!!

Ps, Keep Adebyour as the 3rd choice Striker!

    • We need three strikers, I can't see us buying two so we need to keep Ade and Defoe. Adebayor had a tough start to the season and came good in the end. Managed right, he has the potential to be world class again – lets get behind the poor lost sole, he needs love!

  4. Players want to come to spurs, players overseas want to play in the bpl and players at villa etc want the step up. The issue is the owners/directors want as much money as they can get and levy wants them as cheap as he can get um.. And won’t ever, ever pay what someone says they want! We can have Damiao if we pay 21.5 mil as asked by their director, last year! We offered 18! They said no lol. Same will happen again and again while levy tries to find his nex vdv deal

  5. who ever we buy he has got to hit the ground running so benteke is a great option but harry kane needs to be given a chance maybe third striker behind defoe lets cash in on adebayor as he was a one season wonder when on loan the minute he was bought he lost interest why do we need two strikers when we have just bought paulinho who has an eye for goal

  6. I don't believe any of the rumours anymore as the Spurs fans have been let down time and time again and it's all down to Levy's attitude. The guy is a mug! How many times have we been told we are on the brink of bringing in a striker for it to collapse at the last minute? How many times have we been about £2 million short of the asking price? How many more seasons are we going to let our overpriced deadwood sit on the sidelines and we keep paying their wages? How many more time is Levy going to leave it until the last hours of the transfer window? How many more windows are we going to go without bringing in a quality striker? Lastly how many more windows are going to go by before Levy learns the error of his ways?
As I said the guy is a complete egotistical mug!

  7. We need both Benteke and Soldado, if possible sell Adebayor, we need to get these desls done asap so we can hit the ground running. Last minute deals don’t help anyone, apart from Daniel Levy it seems.

  8. We will never get better than 4th unless levy starts treating us as a football club and not just business..I am so sick of that not another season feeling,we now expect to be behind our london rivals

  9. There is a lot of talk of this player, that player…. One which seems a no brainer to me is…… Baines! If man utd have been told no less than 16mil for him, why do spurs not slap anoffer in straight away? Firstly it takes him away from everton, a rival for european places, 2nd, it keeps him away from man utd meaning they dont get stronger still….. But more importantly, imagine a back 5 reading Lloris, walker, vertonghan, dawson(or kaboul) and baines on the left!!! Would be the best back 5 in the league not to mention the pace walker and baines add to the attack taking a whole lot of pressure off of the miidfield. This really could be a defence that pushes for a title challenge. lloris, walker, dawson, vertonghan baines….. Sandro, paulinho, dembele, lennon bale…… Defoe/ damiao. This is a title winning team!
