Spurs on verge of signing £8.6million midfielder

Tottenham Hotspur appear to be closing in on another signing this evening.

Reports claim that Spurs are set to beat Cardiff City in the race to sign Etienne Capoue from Toulouse. The 25-year-old operates as a central midfielder and has also filled in as a central defender several times for the French club.

Toulouse President Olivier Sadran confirmed the bid by telling RMC Radio that the player “will go to Tottenham.”

A transfer fee of £8.6million has been mentioned for Capoue who will pen a five-year deal, with a medical said to take place tomorrow or Friday.

Many Spurs fans will be assuming that if this deal goes through, the writing will be on the wall for Jake Livermore and Tom Huddlestone.

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. Is this a joke? Spurs already have 6 defensive midfielders: Sandro, Parker, Livermore, Holtby, Dembele (mainly defensive) and Paulinho.

What are they going to do with 7 defensive midfielders?

Where is the creativity in this team??

    • … someone will probably leave. I reckon Livermore, on loan at least. Parker could be very useful if required to win the ball and keep the passing simple. Capoue can cover at CB too, which is nice. That's 6 players for 3 positions in the 4-3-3, sounds good to me. But yes, we do need more attack-minded players to add to and strengthen the selection of Sigurdsson, Lennon, Chadli, Townsend as the 2 behind Soldado.

Don't forget – Dembele, Paulinho and Holtby aren't too shabby going forward either.

    • Holtby, Dembele, and Paulinho are not defensive midfielders.

Sandro was injured for half a season with a serious leg injury
Parker is 32 and a year removed from a serious injury
Livermore is awful, commits way too many fouls and has poor positioning

We have league action, two cups action, and europa league we need depth- last year depth was a glaring issue

    • No, this is an excellent signing, as this boy can play CB as well as DM, so it gives us immediate cover for the injured Dawson and Vertonghen and a like for like replacement for Sandro who is still not ready to come back.

He will slot straight into the DM role and allow Paulinho and Dembele to play further forwards in the CM roles that better suit them. Once Sandro is fully fit again, as we all hope, then this will give us great quality and depth in CM and additional coverage in central defence.

Holtby is not a DM, but you can now expect either Livermore or Parker (or maybe both) plus Huddlestone to be moved on.

  2. In fairness, I'd say Livermore, Parker and huddlestone will definitely be sold now. Remove them from the equation and its a healthy rota of quality midfielders. COYS

  3. this probably tells me that we have buyers [hopefully ] for livermore, parker & huddlestone. I think this is a statement of intent building strength in depth, lets face it parker is finished, thudd is too big and slow and livermore just doesn't cut the mustard at this level. It's good that the board are backing AVB, if we can get a good young centre back and maybe another forward or at least retain Adebayour & Defoe i know they have been crap but not bad to bring on, then i think we are getting there and i hope gareth feels the same way, i fear tho, another slow start we cost us again!

  4. Are you serious? Dembele started his career as a striker, then dropped into midfield, he is not a DM. Holtby is an attcking midfielder and had the best assist record in Europe the season Spurs bought him. Livermore is a box to box CM but his only chances in the side have been as cover for DM due to Sandro's constant injuries. Paulinho is a box to box CM but can play the defensive role and plays it for the national side to allow more skilled attacking players to get forward. Out of all the midfielders you listed only Parker and Sandro are proper defensive midfielders, and Parker has been tipped to leave. Capoue would be a great signing in my opinion so Parker and possibly Huddlestone can be moved on.
Typical hysterical Spurs fan, this has been the best window for transfers in a long time, and it keeps getting better.

  5. Parker is helping to advertise the Turfies, and also helping Dawson with his hair. I reckon he'll stay. We need SOME older players, surely.

  6. Another big strong DM / CB is always needed, tommy hudd should be kept but a few moved on maybe loans for the lads not needed this year. Strikers I hope will be chomping at the bit this year, if Soldado starts then daffy and clumsy will be bench warmers and be keen to get some minutes to massage there ego's. If daffy put as much effort into scoring as he does his driving we would win the league!! All he has to do is get his head-up before he shoots and wow a proper striker!! AIMING RULES!!
