Tottenham Hotspur Player Ratings vs Swansea City

7

Just like Tottenham’s build-up play, this introduction is going to be long, slow and frustrating. But in the end, you will be satisfied (I hope), just like you will have been when Soldado found the net. Townsend was exciting; Capoue was beast-like.

Tottenham are joint-top. 2 games, 2 Soldado pens, 2 clean sheets, 2 wins. Player ratings below.

Hugo – 7 – Didn’t have too much to do but was solid when he had to do said not much. Made some great saves.

The better Kyle – 5 – Lacked offensive additions strangely and was slightly shaky in defence.

Captain, leader, legend – 8 – Extremely solid up against a tough aerial challenge in Michu.

SuperJan – 7 – Played well but still looked a little unfit.

Tulip – 6 – Had a quiet game which is a compliment for a defender.

Paul – 7 – Assured in midfield but needed to be more clinical and decisive going forward, which should come with PL experience.

CaPOW – 7 – Strong and composed in central midfield, the Frenchman is quickly becoming undroppable.

Moose – 5 – Swansea cramped the midfield and Dembele was resultantly ineffective.

Andros Townsend (nickname?) – 8 – A vibrant and exciting display, Townsend was our main threat going forward and won the penalty.

Nacer Chadli (?) – 6 – The Belgian was quiet but held the ball up well in the latter stages of the game.

Goaldado – 7 – A true poacher’s performance, didn’t do too much in open play but took the chance when it presented itself.

Substitutes

Iceman – 6 – Didn’t have much of an influence on the game, mainly because we were defending more than attacking when he was on.

He’s yiddo – 6 – Played the lone striker role surprisingly well in his short cameo up against Chico.

Beast – 6 – Nice to see him edging back to fitness, even if only for a few minutes.

  1. I reckon Townsend looks a bit like Lionel Ritchie so how about Lionel?
Spurs unlucky not to score another couple. When the new players gel, & Lamela & Eriksen? join, we'll be much better & score more goals. Even without Bale Spurs will be better this time than last.

  2. Thought Rose poor 5, Walker out posn too often 5, Daws still too ready to hoof it 7, Paulinho top player 8, Capoue 8 MOM for me

  3. Townsinho! If he was Brazilian EVERYBODY would be raving about him. I think the jury's probably still out on the nickname thing, though. Took me about an hour to work out who the hell you were talking about!

Thought the lads played well, WITHOUT being at our fluid best. Spurs produced a performance that was more about endeavour, commitment and persistence than it was fluidity, or finesse.

I still think it's going to be at LEAST a couple of months before we see this Spurs side REALLY firing. In yesterday's starting line-up there was a total of 6 players (including Rose and Townsend) that started the match, who were not at the club last season. That's more than half the team!!!

Add that to the fact that AVB has already stated he expects more signings and it's easy to believe that this is still very much a work in progress.

Positive signs, though. Can't wait for Holtby's return as a LOT of people seem to forgotten about exactly the kind of quality that Lewis has. The kid is a class act and will LOVE playing behind a striker with the movement of Soldado!!! With Gareth Bale vacating that number 10 role, I believe we will see Lewis Holtby shine.

  4. Paulie should've gotten an 8 if you gave an 8 to Townsend. Townsend looked promising and had some decent attacking bits but was absent for large portions of the game. The only criticism you could have of Paulie was his lack of finishing quality.
