Waiting for the dust to settle…

The merry-go-round has stopped. Some people got on. Some people got off. We’re done. Barring injuries I don’t think we’re going to get anyone in January unless something goes majorly awry – and it won’t.

I’ll be the first to admit it. I got a little greedy. I wanted another big name signing. I thought we had another deadline day masterpiece waiting to happen, the ace up our sleeve, the rabbit out of the hat – call it what you will. After a transfer window where I was praising our early and quite frankly marvelous transfer business, I suddenly reverted to watching Natalie Sawyer (yes not Jim White) on Sky Sports News expecting to show our training ground with some big news.

Harry leaning out of his car window it wasn’t. I should be glad. We managed to sell one player and buy half a team. So now everyone has precisely three statements to make:

1. Spurs won’t be as good without Bale
2. It’ll take longer than a season for all of these players to adapt to the league/gel as a team
3. Anything less than a title challenge would be a failure and AVB will be sacked

I’m a Spurs fan, I know optimism comes with the territory. But for the first time I am not so much optimistic as realistic – I don’t know exactly what’s going to happen. Are we going to be as good as I think we can be? Will the players I’ve watched go on to set the league alight? If Soldado gets injured are we back to Defoe and Adebayor again?

I don’t know. I’m waiting for the dust to settle. I’m waiting for all the players to have trained together. I’m waiting for Kaboul and Sandro to be regular first team starters. I want to see how Rose does at left back. I’m waiting and I’m curious. I think it’s going to be exciting whatever happens.

So do you share my realism or are you still optimistic? How do you think we’ll perform and how long will it take? I’d love to hear your comments below…

  1. Players used to come and go every now and then for Spurs teams, particularly with every change of managers who never seemed to stay for long. But this time with AVB, Spurs seem to have a longer-term project that excites me. With a brand-new stadium in the works and most of the players bought being relatively young, Spurs have exciting times ahead!

  2. im both.To show my realism i wouldnt consider it a failure if we came 5th again bearing in mind its a new team. Having said that if the team gells quickly we could still be challenging the top by Jan/Feb – the question is can we sustain it this time? We certainly have the depth to sustain it. Looking at the players who have come in a realistic target would be 3rd but i wont cry if we come 5th. We still have alot of money to spend if we need to…..i reckon we probably have 50 million which we havene spent….add that onto the tv revenue for next season and your looking at just over 100 million for next summer with or without CL football. We have the right staff to enable us to buy hidden gems….quality players witha future. Max Meyer will be next i hope…..or julian draxler.

Cant wait to see lamela and erikson with solado and either lennon or townsend….so far chadli has looked ok. better in europe than the prem but its early days

    • we have around 40 million before breaking even, I would like to see that put towards a striker that can run with ball to play alongside soldado I am really excited for future transfer windows. However the new signings Could pose a threat to the youth players and make it harder for them to break into the first team. COYS

  3. Spurs need to open the cheque book again in January and buy another striker, AVB knows that and that's what he'll do. Spurs are now a team that is hard to beat and even score against, but what happened to the flair and the goals that made them so exciting in the past? Spurs are a work in progress, the new arrivals need time to gel with the rest of the team and get used to the EPL. Not conceding helps, but scoring goals wins games. We need another striker, January will be the time to get him.

  4. I agree with your comments. I think the jury is out on Danny Rose, personally I don't think he is a top 4 full back and perhaps the same could be said of Kyle Walker. Both good offensively but prone to get out of position defensively.
No chance of challenging for the title this year but I think for AVB top 4 is an absolute must. Anything less than that would have to be regarded as failure.
I'm excited to see if Lamela and Erikson give us that much needed flair and let's see Kaboul restored as a regular starter in the premier league.
So much to be optimistic about this season. COYS.

  5. A lack of creativity, to slow moving the ball, midfeilders looking like there in each others way, that`s my opinion of our start to the premier league our first real test at arsenal and we were poor to say the least, I know people say give them time but we do not have Bale to get us out trouble, which he done on endless occasions, we need more creative players playing, starting with Lemela Eriksen & Holtby and lets move the ball quicker through midfield to the front. and to defend as high as we do you need true pace at the back with only walker who has that.Having said all that our squad is stronger than ever and I have seen us from the late 60s
AVB be brave and play with flair

  7. Although I agree another striker would help I think we need to be creating chances for the one we have(saldado). early signs are he is true quality and something we have not had since Berbatov. I cant emphasize enough about players being allowed to play with expression, Capoue Paulinho Sandro Dembele are all good players but very similar in type, once Eriksen Holtby Lemela are included in the mix it should be far more creative.
As a fan for many years I hope AVB makes it work for me he needs to adjust this continental style just a little
and realise playing with a higher tempo with good players which we have will work
Good Luck AVB I truly hope you get this right
