Alderweireld provides contract update on his situation at Spurs

Toby Alderweireld has admitted that he is “10 out of 10” happy at Tottenham Hotspur, despite there being no further updates on his contract situation at the club.

The Belgian international’s current contract expires next summer. However, the club has an option to extend it by a further year. If this were to happen, it would trigger a £25m release clause for the defender that can be activated before the final two weeks of the 2019 summer transfer window.

He revealed that despite the clock is ticking on the release clause being activated, there has been no progress made regarding rewarding Alderweireld with a new, improved offer.

The 29-year-old recently became a father for the first time recently following the birth of daughter Ayla and has used this experience to put things into perspective whilst admitting he is now back to his old self after last year’s turbulent campaign.

He told Sky Sports News: “I’m the old Toby again. I try to do my best and help the team.

“How happy am I on a scale of one to 10? When you have a daughter it’s 10 out of 10. It doesn’t matter what happens. The joy that I get from that, I try to give it to my football.”

When asked whether there is an update on a new contract, he added: “Not that I can say, no. I’m focused on Spurs and trying to help the team. That’s all I can do.”
