Alderweireld’s agent issues ultimatum to Spurs

Toby Alderweireld’s agent has publically stated that the defender should either be given a new contract at Tottenham or should be granted a transfer.

The Belgian central defender has two years to run on his existing deal at the club, with the option of a further year but that would trigger a £25million release clause from 2019.

In today’s market, Alderweireld is worth at least three times that amount and it appears that the release clause is the major stumbling block as to why he hasn’t put pen to paper.

While the likes of Danny Rose, Eric Dier, Hugo Lloris, Kieran Trippier, Dele Alli and Harry Kane have all signed extended deals, Alderweireld remains on his current £50,000-a-week contract.

Spurs fans have grown in frustration at the fact he’s yet to sign a contract and are increasingly worried that he could leave the club.

His agent Stijn Francis told Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad: “Toby is always good. Even after his injury he recovered well. Tottenham’s statistics fell sharply during his absence.

“If you only look at his figures, Toby is impressive and for his performances, he deserves either a correct contract from Tottenham or a transfer.

“For a transfer, you know that he can only leave Tottenham for seven or eight teams and almost all the other top clubs are interested in Toby.

“There are not a lot of central defenders of his kind, so they are sought after. But those clubs also know they have to negotiate with Daniel Levy.

Manchester City have been heavily linked with a move for Alderweireld, who they apparently view as a successor for the injury prone Vincent Kompany.
