The NFL have today released a statement confirming that they have got Wembley lined up as an alternative stadium venue for the scheduled match between Seattle Seahawks and Oakland Raiders, if the new Tottenham Hotspur stadium is not ready in time.
The match is penciled in for Sunday, October 16th, nearly a full month after Tottenham’s first competitive match is due to take place at our new venue when Liverpool are the visitors in the Premier League on Saturday, September 15th.
The NFL are rumoured to have pumped £10million into the £850million project, which is designed with one side as a dedicated football entrance and the other a dedicated NFL entrance. It also features four NFL-sized locker rooms and additional medical and media suites.
Tottenham have agreed a 10-year deal for the NFL to host a minimum of two matches per year at the stadium.
While Tottenham fans will only be concerned about whether the stadium is ready in time for the Liverpool match, it is interesting that the NFL have decided to go public with their decision.
A statement on the official NFL UK Twitter side, explained their reasoning.
