AVB: One defender will leave Spurs

0

Andre Villas-boas admits that one of his central defenders will not be at Tottenham Hotspur next season.

It doesn’t take a detective to work out that it will be William Gallas who will be packing his bags. Vertonghen only recently signed, Caulker is showing great potential, Kaboul is arguably AVB’s first-choice defender and AVB admits himself it would have been a mistake to sell Michael Dawson.

Gallas is out of contract at the end of the season and there has been speculation linking him with QPR.

AVB told the press: “We started this season with five central defenders because of an injury to Younes Kaboul but this is not normal.

“I can tell you that we will not be starting next season with five – it will be four.”

  1. I am not sure that AVB understands the Injury issues we have at THFC. Every single season that i can remember since the late 1960's we have always had serious injuries in all areas, and unfortunately not the 'fringe' players, but our main first team players. I for one think we should have 5 central defenders on the books (and not as AVB says just 4) as just as night comes after day, we will have at least 2 injuries in defence next season so must have back-up. As already proved by his pathetic statement lately saying he was very happy at a ‘Risk we are willing to take’ regarding the Strikers situation. Three days after not signing a striker we lose Defoe (everyone knew it would happen – i said it would in my blog), and with Ade away, we had No Strikers at all. As i have said before, he should not be taking 'Risks' with our club. We are not a pub team. We simply should be 'Strenghening', not weakening.

    • I think we've actually been fairly reasonable on the injury front of late, and have had things pretty much covered. Also, what he is talking about it 4 specialist CBs, NOT 4 people who can play CB if needed.

Also, you talk as if these are uncalculated risks, taken for no reason, with no thought behind them, and no gains to be made from them. Wages! We're trying to build a bigger staduim to become a bigger club in the long-term. This is not to dimiss people's concerns about the present as being short-sighted, but the big picture and long-term interests of the club are important!

Defoe will be back soon. Now that it looks like we're moving away from 442 towards 1 up top, having only 2strikers is probably just about alright. With the arrival of Holtby and development of Bale, we're becoming more fluid up top, and so less dependent on our non-scoring strikers.
