Sebastien Bassong is looking to learn off the experienced defenders at the club in order to hold onto his place at Tottenham Hotspur.

Bassong, who moved to White Hart Lane in the summer from Newcastle has been partnering Ledley King in the absence of injured duo Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Dawson.

Bassong told the official Spurs site: “Every player needs competition to move forward. I am here for the examination and I am ready for it.

“We have some outstanding central defenders here, I don’t think there are many other clubs in the Premier League with so many of such a high standard. I knew before I signed that if everyone is fit it will be a tough fight to play.

“But I can’t fail to learn from the others. I watch Ledley all the time and know that I can benefit a lot from him and Woody. I am still young with a lot to learn so having players like them around is a good thing for me.”

  1. BASSON started like a house on fire and is now flickering by that i meen he is showing a few raw edges that when ledley is missing look a bit more alarming .This is because corluka is also not used to this role .When the others are fit i think HARRY will use bassong in ekottos role or corlukas for a bit being relegated nockes your confidents thats why when ledly plays he feels less nervous. If tom hudds wasent in the team then we would have drawn most of our games 1-1 this is because we are conceding a goal a game upto now and three of them where gifts ..When tom dident play and jenas was in his role we scored 1 goal we need to score when we are on top this seem more of a problem at home these days scoring early will solve this problem and a more attacking team for the first half lennon palacios hudds keane defoe crouch would do for starters.

  2. Well, I kind of disagree actually. For one, tactically we have tended to dominate most of our matches, so we take the risk going forward. The reason why we also tend to be exposed behind. This is also the case even with the established Top 4 teams like Chelsea, Man U and Liverpool, they too have conceded goals and have had to come from behind to win their matches. Ultimately, when you dominate you are more likely to score atleast 1 more than your opponent even if you concede, that is what matters. Secondly, I think Bassong has a very good positioning and composure. Most of the goals conceded so far by Tottenham have been because Corluka has always been out of position when playing in central defence. Further, I think Ekotto is doing an exceptional job in his wing, participating in creative play and even made critical challenges in defence to avoid conceding goals in the few matches played so far. The defense is fairly stable and there is quality there. It will be naïve to think that we can have a defence that does not concede goals at all because opposing strikers wonn’t be “sleeping” either. While the attack line has been performing so well so far, I think what is more critical for Tottenham to break among the Top 4 even more than the defence, is for the strikers to be as lethal as the strike force of the Top 4 teams since Tottenham has the ability to clearly dominate its games. That way it is easier to “finish off” a game so the team can play more relax, this explains why Birmingham could have almost snatch a victory in the late minutes.
