Benitez bemoans Spurs result

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez bemoaned his luck side’s luck following the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Mohamed Diame and substitute Salomon Rondon were both denied by the woodwork to ensure that all three points went back to N17.

Thankfully for Spurs, Dele Alli overcame any post-World Cup rustiness to head us to an opening-day Premier League victory in the Toon for the second season in a row.

The England international’s contribution sealed a 2-1 win at St James’ Park, with all the goals coming inside the opening 18 minutes as Joselu cancelled out Jan Vertonghen’s opener before Alli struck to seal the win.

Benitez told the post match press conference: “We deserved at least a draw. We played against a very good team, you could see the quality that they have. But at the same time, you could see our team spirit, our work-rate and also the chances that we had, so I think we deserved a little bit more.”
