You’re the Boss: Pick your Tottenham team vs Benfica

Tottenham Hotspur face Benfica this evening in the last 16 of the Europa League.

Despite our indifferences in the Premier League, there’s something special about a European night at White Hart Lane.

I feel it will be crucial for us to keep a clean sheet going into the second leg.  Sherwood has put a rocket up some of his players after the Chelsea result and it’ll be interesting to see if any raise to his challenge.

If you were Tim Sherwood, what would your Tottenham starting XI be?  Here’s what we have come up with:-

Walker Kaboul Vertonghen Rose

Lennon Sandro Eriksen Townsend

Soldado Adebayor

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. Your proposed formation is my favourite… And I would be more than happy to play like that. If rose is not 100% fit yet then maybe play Fryers instead and have Rose ready for Arsenal at the weekend.

If we need to absorb more pressure, are losing out in the middle of the park, or have a good few goal lead to defend, I would take the formation you suggest, and switch it to a 4-1-4-1 formation. Take off Soldado (or Ade to rest for the weekend) and bring on Paulinho; to drop sando back between the midfield and defence.

  2. Benfica are no mugs. They have a team and squad that is brimming with talent, which means spurs will do VERY well to beat the Portuguese giants, to qualify for the next round. Personally, I think talk of a 442 is as BOLD, as it is NAIVE. Without Dembele in the side, this is a team that is likely to keep the ball better than Spurs and pose a HUGE threat in the spaces behind Tottenhams midfield with the likes of Savio, Djuricic, Guaitain and Sulejmani. The team I have picked is designed to attack, as well as be hard working and resolute.

    Sandro Bentaleb

    Townsend Sigurdsson Erirksen

Back 4 is pretty much self explanatory. As is the selection of Sandro. Bentaleb, although better in a 3, will benefit from having a AUTHENTIC/NATUR AL DM playing beside him, and Sigurdsson retains his place in the side, offering the side a GENUINE goal THREAT from midfield.

I think Gyfil has PLENTY to offer Spurs providing he gets a good run in the side. A player who I believe is capable of scoring between 8-12 league goals given a regular run in the side, the Icelandic international has only shown glimpses of his potential since arriving at Spurs. The combination play between the Icelander, Eriksen and Soldado showed REAL promise early on in the season (i.e. Chelsea and Norwich at home) before the debacle that was West Ham, which left Sigurdsson highlighted as the scapegoat.

Townsend returns to HIS favoured position on the right, in an attempt to help him regain his early season form.

With no obvious target man in MY side, a lack of ‘wingers’ will be of less importance as the emphasis will be more on CLEVER, QUICK, INTERCHANGES, and DYNAMIC MOVEMENTS around the oppositions penalty box.

ALL of the 3 players operating behind Soldado know how to thread a pass, and with Rose and Walker charged with supplying the width, Spurs should have more than enough to cause Benfica problems WITHOUT being tactically exposed.

Ade, Lennon and Dembele on the bench with the North London Derby looming on the horizon. The FACT that Arsenal played on Tuesday, although they travelled, means that they will have a significant advantage in terms of recovery, and MY team is a result of me being mindful of that!
