Friedel to face Lyon confirms AVB

Andre Villas-Boas has confirmed that Brad Friedel, and not Hugo Lloris, will start in goal for Tottenham against Lyon.

Friedel started the season as Tottenham’s number one but Hugo Lloris finally ousted the American as first-choice two months after moving to Spurs. AVB’s decision means that Lloris will not face his former side.

Elsewhere, William Gallas is expected to start in the Spurs defence.

Tottenham(from): Friedel, Lloris, Vertonghen, Gallas, Naughton, Dawson, Walker, Assou-Ekotto, Dempsey, Huddlestone, Lennon, Parker, Bale, Holtby, Dembele, Sigurdsson, Livermore, Bentaleb, Ceballos, Adebayor.

  1. I agree, would much rather have Lloris in goal, and he would surely love to face his former club.

However, AVB is consciously setting a tone and precendent of respect and appreciation for all members of the squad where it is due (for want of better words and phrases). One of the things many players (Caulker for example) have said that they love about AVB, in contrast to Harry, is that there are no faviourites and that he includes everyone.

    • There is no question of 'turn' or trying to please someone in competitive footbal and be popular for it.. Your no. one remains your no. 1 especially in such an important match. See what happened in our FA Cup match against Leeds United. We rotated the goalkeeper and we lost..

    • Chillout! I don't think anyone is disagreeing with you.

I think we're all pretty enamoured with Lloris, he is clearly the superior keeper, who enables us to play a higher-line, which is something the team has become accustomed to. However, we were pretty keen and appreciative of Fridel before Lloris came along, he is still a very good keeper, we should be able to trust him. AVB, appearing to be in for the long-haul, is practicing something that has its benefits beyond the scope of this game.
