When Spurs began furiously, much of the penetration came down his flank where he was available and judged well when to pass and when to cross – at least one beauty. Defended with strength and discipline.

Spurs have picked up the points this season but there have been question marks about the performances. This was a performance. Like last year at their best. Not just beating massive rivals (in both the table and the city) but beating them with so much to spare.

It seemed to be a matter, dare I say, of fitness. Kane and Son ran with freedom. Potentially stolid midfielders looked mobile – has Dier lost a stone in weight in the past month? Notoriously pedestrian starters at times, here Spurs were out of the gates with their old pressing game, starting from the front, smothering Chelsea ball players. It’s such a tough week that one fears they won’t be able to sustain it but they will be buoyed by this and they just might … they just might.
