Here’s a conundrum. A player who only weeks ago I asked to be moved on as so deadly dull in midfield as to be capable of killing a game single-handed. And, yet, he is the squad member with the most mischief and liveliness. His statements after the semi-final about losing your own ego in service of the team were superb. I’ll bet he is a hugely important part of what goes on from week to week. And so it was brilliant he scored and played today very serviceably at the back.

The Tottenham Hotspur players and backroom staff show their thanks to the supporters in their customary lap of appreciation around the pitch at the new stadium following the 2-2 draw against Everton this afternoon.

Among the players who ventured onto the turf was Harry Kane, who was accompanied by his fiance Kate and their two children. It was certainly great to see the people behind the Spurs stars also being recognised for their unsung efforts.

Spurs will now look to re-focus ahead of the Champions League final against Liverpool in Madrid on June 1st.
