Gary Mabbutt gives his view on Christian Eriksen’s future at Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur legend Gary Mabbutt believes that Christian Eriksen will not run down his contract at the club.

The Dane’s current deal expires in less than 18 month’s time and Mabbutt is of the opinion that he would have left last summer if he had a desire to leave Spurs.

Spurs have been ready to more than double his current £70,000-a-week wages but Eriksen has yet to sign a new contract and has been linked with a potential move to Real Madrid, who could offer significantly higher wages than Spurs would be able to offer under the current pay structure (Daily Mail).

Dele Alli signed a new £150,000-a-week deal in October while Harry Kane’s contract is worth £200,000-a-week which means that Eriksen currently earns considerably less than two of his colleagues.

Mabbutt has referenced Tottenham’s progression as a club over recent years as a sign that players no longer need to leave due to how things are evolving under Mauricio Pochettino’s tutelage.

He told Mabbutt told Ian Stone’s Comedy Breakfast on LoveSportRadio: “Going into the end of season last year, there were a lot of concerns among people and the media that all the main top players like the Harry Kanes, Dele Allis and Christian Eriksens would be leaving. Hugo Lloris, Alderweireld and Vertonghen too,”

“As it was, not one player left last summer.

“It’s all down to the individual. They had the options available to them but I see no reason why, where the club is at the moment and where we’re going, a player needs to leave.”
