Erik Lamela scored a first-half hat-trick as Tottenham sailed into the Europa League knockout stages as group winners with a 4-1 win over Monaco.

The Argentina international this season looks a player reborn under Mauricio Pochettino and the winger completed his treble in just 37 minutes, before Tom Carroll added a late fourth following Stephan El Shaarawy’s second-half consolation.

Erik Lamela told BT Sport: “I am happy for me and for the team because we won and we played a good game.

“I am confident, the team is confident. I think we are doing good at the moment, but we need to keep working in the same way to take another position in the league.”

Tom Carroll, having marked a rare appearance with a goal, said: “I was obviously delighted to get the goal at the end, but it was a great performance all-round.

“When I got the nod, that’s when you’ve got to take your opportunities and hopefully I did that tonight.

“We wanted to go out and win the group. We knew we had to get at least a point tonight, but our mentality was to go out and win the game and we did that.”

  1. Tom Carroll is beginning to win me over. His ability as a passing midfielder is obvious, but he's always looked lightweight to me. Last night though, he showed the sort of aggression and intensity that could possibly move him to the next level. His goal wasn't too bad either. COYS!
