Lloris celebrates “perfect” birthday with victory over Norwich

Hugo Lloris was grateful for the perfect birthday present after Tottenham thrashed Norwich on Boxing Day to continue their push for the top four.

Spurs fans sang ‘Happy Birthday’ towards the end of the 3-0 win at White Hart Lane after Lloris made a superb double save to deny Cameron Jerome and preserve his seventh clean sheet of the season.

The French keeper, who turned 29 on the day, has been one of the Tottenham’s star performers again this year and he thanked his fans and team-mates for a memorable afternoon.

“It was a perfect day for me and I want to thank my team-mates and all the fans for this day,” Lloris told Spurs TV.

“It’s never easy when you leave your children and your wife at home and it’s your birthday.

“It was a great game and I’m really happy with the performance first and the result.

“We’re in a good way and now we need to rest because Monday (at Watford) will be tough.”

Harry Kane scored twice and Tom Carroll added a third late on as Tottenham moved three points clear of stuttering Manchester United in the race for the Champions League.

It means Mauricio Pochettino’s side have registered back-to-back wins since their shock defeat at home to Newcastle two weeks ago and they now turn their attention to Monday’s match at in-form Watford.

“We can now say it was an accident against Newcastle – we’re very pleased with the reaction,” Pochettino said.

“We should not forget we are the youngest team in the Premier League but we show consistency and maturity every week.

“The last 15 minutes against Newcastle were very difficult for us and we lost the game, but you can improve from defeat.

“Watford will be a different challenge. They have had fantastic results so far and we expect a very tough game.

“Watford are a very strong team, they usually play 4-4-2 and we’ll see how they play against us.

“We don’t have much time to prepare but we know them and they know us.”
