Negredo in? – Rumour Mill round-up

Alvaro Negredo - Header

Well, it’s Friday. The day of the much publicised press conference at Spurs.

There has been plenty of speculation throughout the last few days and weeks but it would appear that today will be the start proper, of Spurs transfer dealings.

First up, it appears that we have (all but completed) secured the services of Kyle Naughton and Kyle Walker from Sheffield United for around £8million. Both players have ben touted as potential players for the future but given our track record with ‘potentially’ good players this remains to be seen.

The REALLY big news of course is that we have, or are about to sign, Alvaro Negredo from Real Madrid for about €15milion. Not knowing too much about this player, I trawled through youtube yesterday for some highlights of his career so far and it looks promising. Two footed and an accomplished goal scorer he could be a big asset for us. The real question (pardon the pun) is whether or not he could cut it in the Premier. He almost certainly would have to learn English but this seems to be of less concern to big clubs as time goes by, but given Pav’s troubles last year we really need to be wary of this.

Chris Gunter is expected to head back to Forest for a season long loan and providing we can hold on to him, this can only be a good thing. Having not had too many chances at Spurs recently he’ll need to get some match practice and at Forest he’s likely to play most of their games.

As for the Ashley Young saga, it is being reported that the Villa chairman will seriously consider bids of £25million and up. The question is, do we have the money or patience to pay that sort of fee for a player that has essentially had one consistent season in the Premier? We’ve been burned before in this sort of situation. Bentley and Bent are just a couple of examples and given Harry’s preferred roaming role for Modric, do we really need a left winger? Well the short answer is yes. With Lennon on the right and Young on the left I genuinely believe we’d scare the pants off of any team we came across but I’m starting to think that this is just a pipe dream. Martin O’Neil would be a fool to let go of Young and he knows it. So don’t expect too much of this situation.

Well only a few hours to go before the press conference. Will Harry shock us all with the signings of Young, Heinze, Robben and Huntelaar. I seriously doubt it but don’t forget…… once upon a time we signed Jurgen Klinsmann.
