Newcastle boss Benitez laughs at Tottenham’s claims

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez admits that he laughs at claims that Tottenham Hotspur are experiencing a injury crisis.

Benitez saw his Magpies side lose 1-0 at Wembley on Saturday afternoon to a late Heung-min Son goal, with the South Korean taking on his share of the goalscoring burden.

Tottenham are without the services of Harry Kane (ankle) and Dele Alli (hamstring) until early next month, with some claiming that their season would be over after missing the key pair. However, despite making no signings in the past two transfer windows, Spurs continue to punch above their weight.

Benitez rubbished the claim as a joke and believes that the Spurs squad has the depth and quality to be able to cope with injuries.

The victory for Spurs helped to tighten their grip on a top four finish and have opened up a 10 point gap between themselves and North London rivals Arsenal who occupy sixth spot in the Premier League table.

Benitez told the Chronicle Live: “I have to laugh a bit when they say they lose players to injuries because of the quality of the players they have to come in.

“When you have competition [for places], it’s always possible for the team.”
