Paul Merson on whether Spurs’ title hopes will end this weekend

Football pundit Paul Merson has had his say on whether he thinks Tottenham Hotspur can continue their title challenge.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side will make the trip north to take on Burnley in the Premier League in Saturday’s early kick off (12:30 BST).

Spurs could be boosted by the return of star striker Harry Kane, who has been out of action since damaging ankle ligaments last month in the defeat at Wembley to Manchester United.

Elsewhere, Danny Rose is considered a doubt with an illness, but could be replaced by the fit again Ben Davies.

The Clarets will certainly pose a tough threat having not lost any of their last six top flight matches, having won two and drawn four.

Merson, however, believes that Spurs will have enough to keep their winning run going. Spurs find themselves five points behind both Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the table and could be back in the hunt if Liverpool lose to rivals United, according to the former Arsenal midfielder.

He told Sky Sports: “Tottenham could get back in the title race if they win this game and Liverpool don’t beat Manchester United.

“If Liverpool beat United, then I don’t think Spurs are in it – I think it’s too many points – but if they win this and Liverpool don’t win, then they are in it because they still have to play Liverpool.

“I don’t think Burnley will go down. They have enough know-how, they are on a good run and they are hard to beat. However, I fancy Spurs to win this game.

“Prediction: 1-3.”
