MOMENT OF THE MATCH

In the 44th minute, a Christian Eriksen shot deflected off Fabricio Coloccini to Danny Rose, whose low cross to Harry Kane was just too close to the goal for the striker to slide in and score. Had that been the second goal, any sort of comeback would have been beyond Newcastle. On such fine margins are many Premier League games decided.

MOAN OF THE MATCH

Referee Roger East was not happy when Tottenham’s Kyle Walker, who had been off for treatment after a 50-50 challenge with Newcastle left-back Paul Dummett, tried to come back into play and take the throw in. Walker was ready to throw the ball in when East blew his whistle and ran over to the 25-year-old defender only to tell him to put both feet on to the pitch so he could step back off the pitch to take the throw.

VIEW FROM THE BENCH

Mauricio Pochettino will be particularly frustrated at Spurs’ second half performance, but they have done little wrong so far this season and a rare defeat in an unpredictable division should not be held against him. The coming weeks should be interesting, however. How will Spurs respond, and how will he balance a squad he asks so much of during the busiest period of the season?

  1. Eriksen a 7??? Ridiculous. If it weren’t for his set pieces, he’d be out by long. No wonder none of the big teams come for him – way too inconsistent at the top level.

  2. Walker & Rose gave the ball away so often – Son was invisible – Erikson very poor – as Wolowitz says way to inconsistent – when he's not playing well Harry doesn't score!!!!!!

  3. You won't get the best out of Erikson by playing him wide. Playing him the no 10 pos you will also get better service to Kane who had no service at all today.

  4. Dier had another poor game today, good goal but was lost in the middle a bit, missed dembele badly today.
we need wanyama & another striker to keep this season improving.
been good so far, would rather lose than draw today, the unbeaten run over so can forget trying to hold out for the draw & concentrate on pushing for a second to kill teams off, blown many 1-0 leads recently.
COYS Spend some money on 2 players desperately needed, midfield & up front.

  5. Was very impressed with Carroll and Lamela today. They really got stuck in and whenever we lost the ball they were the ones trying hard to get it back. Eriksen's workrate needs to improve. On numerous occasions I saw him with his back to the ball and just strolling along, not even trying to get into a good position. Would like to see Son get more starts, always (well, nearly) he's very lively and seems to up the tempo of the whole team.
I'm not too downbeat about this defeat, it happens. If someone said to me before the start of the season that 16 games in we would have only 2 defeats and be 11 points above Chelski, everyone of us would have taken that. Looking forward to our next game, as I always do.

  6. A poor performance by all but Lamela and Tom Carroll who deserves more chances. Eriksen looked as though he couldn't be bothered (again!), Rose yet again not fullfilling his left back roll properly, and Dier away with the fairies apart from his well taken goal. Most of the team looked as though they thought they just had to turn up to get the 3 points off a team in th relegation zone, and they should know by now that it doesn't work like that. No doubt Norwich will stuff us too!
