Poch gives update on Alderweireld contract situation

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has hinted that Toby Alderweireld’s contract situation could be sorted after the transfer window closes on Thursday.

The Belgian defender’s current deal is due to end in 2019 and has been a revelation since his move to north London two year ago.

The arrival of the club-record signing of Davinson Sanchez from Ajax had some Spurs worried that he could be viewed as a replacement for Alderweireld, but Pochettino insists Sanchez’s signing had nothing to do with the future of Alderweireld.

Instead the Spurs boss has hinted that Daniel Levy will focus on improving the contracts of players after the transfer window slams shut.

“It’s not related,” Pochettino told ESPN. “Today, I was talking for one hour with Toby. He is so happy here. The club now is so busy trying to add more quality to the team. It’s true that Davinson is more competition for our centre-backs but it can only be good.

“No doubt, when the window finishes, Daniel will try to work and make happy every single player of the club.”
