What Pochettino said after Newport embarrassment

Mauricio Pochettino was not impressed with the performance of his players following Tottenham’s 1-1 draw at Newport County in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

After 81 minutes, it looked as if the Premier League side were going to become the biggest scalp of the round, only for Harry Kane to tap in a Heung-min Son flick to rescue our hopes.

We were second best for the vast majority of the game against our League Two opponents, our players need to buck up their ideas when Manchester United are the visitors to Wembley on Wednesday evening in the Premier League.

We were very lucky to come away from South Wales still in the competition.

“A little bit relieved, well a lot,” Pochettino told the press.

“We were very disappointed with the first half, in the last half hour we created some chances and deserved the draw.

“We lost every challenge in the first half, difficult to play forward and always playing safe. The team didn’t really show that they wanted to go through to the next round.”

He added: “If we want to go to the next step we need to be strong,” Pochettino added. “That is the competition. We showed the ambition and the decision to play.

“We want to go further and try to fight to win the competition. We need to be more motivated though.”
