Rate the Players: Watford 2-2 Spurs (2-4 pens)

Before the game all the talk was about Tottenham having to play their Carabao Cup tie against Watford at Stadium MK.

However, it took a penalty shootout for Spurs to book their place in the fourth round of the competition thanks to the heroics of Paulo Gazzaniga who saved two of Watford’s efforts.

Mauricio Pochettino watched on as his side crashed out of the cup competition with a toothless performance to suffer their second defeat at the hands of the Hornets within the space of a month.

Tottenham did not really threaten the Watford goal during the first half and certainly missed a creative spark in the final third of the pitch. It certainly wasn’t a 45 minutes which will live in memory and failed to test former keeper Gomes.

It took the visitors just 40 seconds to break the deadlock in the second half.

The Tottenham back four were spread out so there were big gaps, Isaac Success showed great strength to keep Serge Aurier at arms’ length and he drove it past Paulo Gazzaniga at the near post.

On 50 minutes, Dele Alli had the opportunity to level the score after a smart ball from Moussa Sissoko but the former MK Dons player could only fire over the bar. Just minutes later a penalty appeal from Sissoko was waved away by the referee.

Tottenham came close to leveling on 74 minutes when Heung-min Son’s shot was cleared off the line.

The game came into life in the last 10 minutes with first Dele Alli scoring from the penalty spot and then Erik Lamela put us ahead. In typical recent fashion, Spurs looked defensively frail and conceded once again through former Spur Capoue.
