Recent Liverpool and Chelsea signings are not as good as Spurs maestro claims ex-England international

Danny Murphy played for both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur during his playing career and has had his say on where he thinks Mousa Dembele ranks as a midfielder.

Dembele, 31, has just eleven months to run on his existing contract at Tottenham and has been heavily linked with a move away from the club during the summer transfer window.

While the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea have splashed out big money during the summer on Fabinho and Jorginho respectively, Murphy believes that Dembele is a far better player than both.

It is now widely expected that Dembele will remain with Spurs beyond the end of the European transfer window which closes on August 31stand could run down his contract and leave on a free transfer next summer in order to get one final big payday.

Murphy said in an interview with bwin: “It’s very difficult for Tottenham to improve on what they already have. To improve on the players they have, it would cost a lot of money and they’d also be competing against rival clubs who can afford to pay a lot more.

“Chelsea have just splashed out on Jorginho, but he wouldn’t get in Tottenham’s team ahead of [Mousa] Dembele. Liverpool have spent the money on Fabinho, but I’m not convinced he’s better than Dembele either. It’s near impossible to find world-class players who aren’t on the radar of the other big teams but who would be happy to sit on the bench to improve the squad at Tottenham.”
