Redknapp: We could have signed Rossi for £18m

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp will make signing a high-profile striker his priority in the summer transfer market but it will not be Atletico Madrid’s Uruguayan forward Diego Forlan.

Redknapp has admitted that Spurs could have previously signed Villarreal striker Giuseppe Rossi for £18million, only to find his price had inflated to £35million when Spurs went on a somewhat desperate striker hunt on the final few days of the January transfer window.

“I’d like to get another front man, if I can,” he said.

“They’re difficult to find. We went for [Giuseppe] Rossi last year and he was suddenly £35million. We could have had him before for £18million. But we didn’t do it.”

  1. In order a high class and ambitious player to play for a club that doesn’t play regularly in international competitions or is regularly challenging domestic championships or doesn’t manifest its obvious intention and efforts to become such a club, he must either be rather young and at the beginning of his football career or he must be offered a very high salary and a long contract.

    • So what's Rossi getting at Villareal then? They are hardly any better off than Spurs in terms of playing continantal football in recent seasons.

  2. Just goes to show it’s no good leaving everything to the last minute in order to try and grab a bargain. Good idea for buying cabbages but not quality footballers and it’s the later we need!

  3. shame-for 35m we might have got a few extra points and been safe for 4th. yes, we need a 20 goal-a-season striker, but would like to see a new keeper bought in as well. Gomes is too erratic to be a top keeper-reckon he’s cost us more points than he’s saved us this season. Just doesn’t inspire confidence.

So-IF we don’t sell our top players we need a keeper, centre back and striker! But who?

  4. Why not? Why did we wait untill the final seconds of the window to find out the price had doubled? As much as I appreciate Levy and what he's done statements like this just go to show what happens when brinksmanship fails.

  5. redcrapp you are out of youre depth.we needed you when you came in but not now.this guy has not got a clue and knowing arry he will try and bring in 3 or 4 30plus players in the summer.not once has he given a chance to any kid, bostock, gio, livermore, this guy brings on jenas!!!!!levy pull the plug now cause this guy will f*** us up bigtime.

  6. Buy a f8cking goalkeeper aswell, Gomes is a complete c*nt who has made this club a laughing stock…..seen better keepers on Sunday mornings. Jug eared prick

    • It's not Gomes's fault the officials do not apply the rules of the game properly. His error, aside from the obvious, is expecting them to do so. You don't guess whether the ball has crossed the line. Likewise how could he have anticipated Clattenburg (spelling?) simply giving United a goal? What is forgotten there once the result is recorded is that occurred at a time when united had a habit of conceding late goals and we had a habit of scoring them. Technology won't come in because more often than not, borderline decisions favour the big (economic) elite teams.

Gomes might have slightly more confidence and conviction in his play had these atrocities not gone against him.

  7. Re: strikers, yeah, we were a bit last minute. Defoe isn't a top class striker, he tends to blast everything, but, he actually looked sharp yesterday and looked like he might create something out of nothing. Before his injury and woeful form he was looking the best we'd seen him. He'd got into the England team, had scored goals, and finally looked like he'd score something out of nothing again for the first time in years. But he was unlucky with injuries and Harry did mis-manage him slightly. For example, picking Keane ahead of him against United after he'd just started scoring again, can't have been great for his confidence, as he even said. Keane, really!?

  8. WHY CAN`T HARRY TAKE HIMSELF DOWN RIO WAY AND SEE WHAT DIAMOND`S HE CAN UNEARTH , WE HAVE TO AGREE THAT YOUNG SANDRO IS A CRACKING PLAYER WE HAVE AT WHL THE LAD HAS COME ON SO REALLY WELL AND HE FEARS NOTHING , THERE MUST BE SOME GOOD STRIKERS THERE DEFENDERS AND WINGERS AND FULL BACKS , HARRY HAS TO ADMIT IT WAS WORTH THE LONG HAUL DOWN TO BRAZIL TO GET SANDRO SO GET A MOVE ON HARRY ! ! !
