According to a report in the Daily Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld could be a Manchester United player within 48 hours.
Talks between both clubs have been taking place for a while but apparently, a breakthrough has been made on a transfer fee. Previously, Tottenham were refusing to budge from their £75million valuation of the Belgian defender, with a deal now said to be agreed at around the £60million mark.
Alderweireld has only 11 months to run, but the club has the option to trigger a one-year extension, which would, however, activate a clause allowing him to leave for £25m in the final two weeks of next summer’s transfer window. He has apparently already rejected an improved £130,000-a-week offer.
Tottenham are mindful of this and rather than risk losing one of their most valuable assets for a cut-price and are now apparently willing to meet United’s offer.
Frustratingly, there is no mention of a deal for Anthony Martial within the piece. If Alderweireld leaves and we are still yet to bring in any new signings, Tottenham fans have an absolute right to be p*ssed off with Daniel Levy.
A shiny new stadium is great, but we want a side who can compete for trophies.
