Report: Experienced Spurs star identified as ideal replacement for Manchester United player

Italian giants Roma are reported to be keen to bring Jan Vertonghen to Serie A next season.

The centre-back’s contract expires in North London at the end of the season and is yet to agree a new deal.

Football Insider recently claimed that Spurs are understood to have offered a one-year extension on reduced terms but the former Ajax man who turns 33 in April, wants at least another two years to extend his stay with the Champions League finalists.

The Daily Mail report that Roma have identified Vertonghen as an alternative option to Manchester United’s Chris Smalling who is currently on a season-long loan deal at Paulo Fonseca’s side.

It is claimed that Vertonghen’s presence could provide some much needed experience to the Roma defence who have a relatively young backline.

Roma are chasing a place in next season’s Champions League and currently find themselves three points off Atalanta in fourth place in the Serie A standings (Sky Sports).
