Report: Italian giants could be set to move for Vertonghen after Man United negotiation issues

Roma could be set to switch their attention to Jan Vertonghen after struggling to agree a transfer fee with Manchester United for Chris Smalling.

United are said to be prepared to allow Smalling to leave Old Trafford this summer after he impressed on loan at the Serie A giants.

Smalling’s form in Italy was said to have caught the eye of England boss Gareth Southgate, who admitted he regrets criticising the former Fulham player (BBC).

Italian news outlet Il Messaggero claim that both sides are failing to compromise from either end of their valuation which could open the door for an approach for Vertonghen.

The Belgian international left Tottenham after eight years following the final match of the season against Crystal Palace earlier this month after not being offered a fresh deal after finding himself out of contract (The Telegraph).

Vertonghen recently admitted in an interview with talkSPORT that he will soon make his mind up on his next destination when he has weighed up all of his offers.
