Report: Jose Mourinho is keen to bring in new first-team player in this position

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Jose Mourinho will soon experience his first summer transfer window since taking over from Mauricio Pochettino.

The Portuguese was active in January having recruited Gedson Fernandes on an 18-month loan, while Steven Bergwijn and Giovani Lo Celso penned permanent deals.

Marca report that Tottenham will be in the market for a new central defender with uncertainty still surrounding Jan Vertonghen’s future.

The Belgian international will be out of contract in North London in the summer and as things currently stand will leave the club as a free agent.

Tottenham have been linked with a host of defensive options in recent weeks including Manchester United’s Chris Smalling (Corriere dello Sport) and Dayot Upamecano of RB Leipzig (Daily Mail).

Opinion

It’s no secret that Spurs have failed to improve defensively since Mourinho’s arrival and certainly makes sense to look to recruit at the heart of the back four given Vertonghen’s situation.

Historically, our defence was solid under Mauricio Pochettino until this season and is one of the areas which needs vast improvement once the campaign is able to resume.
