Report: Spurs agree fee for striker

Tottenham Hotspur are reported to have agreed a fee with Chelsea for the transfer of Olivier Giroud.

The Sun claim that both clubs have reached an agreement for the French international but another hurdle stands in the way of the deal being completed.

Chelsea firstly want to sign Napoli forward Dries Mertens before they sanction the departure of Giroud.

The report suggests that Chelsea are unlikely to persuade Mertens to make the switch to Stamford Bridge which in turn would scupper the former Arsenal player’s return to North London.

Giroud has fallen down the pecking order under Frank Lampard with the Chelsea boss instead preferring to play Michy Batshuayi as back-up to Tammy Abraham.

Spurs have been on the look out for a target man after Harry Kane tore his hamstring on New Year’s Day and is not expected to return to training until April.

Mertens is said to be keen to remain at the Serie A side until he becomes the Italian club’s record goalscorer and is just six goals short of Marek Hamsik’s record of 122 (The Sun).
