Report: Spurs could rival Chelsea with move for former Liverpool ace

The Daily Mirror claim that Tottenham Hotspur could join the race to sign Philippe Coutinho.

The report suggests that Barcelona have already offered the Brazilian to Premier League clubs with London rivals Chelsea having expressed an interest in taking him back to England.

Coutinho left Liverpool in January 2018 to complete a £145million transfer to the Catalan giants but has failed to make an impact since his move.

Spurs were linked with a move for the 27-year-old last summer only for the Champions League finalists to withdraw their interest and he made the switch to Bayern Munich (BBC).

The Bundesliga side are not prepared to take up the option to buy Coutinho at the end of the season with Liverpool also having snubbed the opportunity to take him back to Anfield.

Barcelona are reported to have held talks with Chelsea over a loan deal but want to include an obligation to buy the player at the end of the spell, with the Stamford Bridge side said to prefer an option to buy even if it means they have to pay a higher fee as a result of concerns over his consistency.

Opinion

It remains to be seen whether Spurs will look to rekindle any interest in Coutinho, if Spurs miss out on Champions League football along with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic it would be unlikely for Levy to shell out such a high transfer fee.
