Report: Spurs decide against long-term target; turn attention to Premier League playmaker

Tottenham Hotspur are reported to have ended their interest in Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes.

The Daily Mail report that Mauricio Pochettino has decided not to pursue a move for the Portugal international who spent last season on loan at Everton.

Gomes’ future at the Nou Camp appears to be over with the Catalan giants ready to cash in on him this summer.

Everton are keen to make the move for the 25-year-old, but somewhat foolishly did not include a clause to turn the loan deal into a permanent transfer which has allowed West Ham United to also register an interest.

Instead, the report claims that Spurs will turn their attention to Leicester City’s James Maddison who has impressed in his debut season in the Premier League following his transfer from Norwich City.

Tottenham’s interest in Maddison could depend on the future of Christian Eriksen. The Dane has just over a year to run on his existing deal in North London and has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid (The Sun).

Opinion

While Gomes has done well at Everton, we require players who can help take us to the next level with creativity and guile in the final third of the pitch. Maddison can certainly offer this, but Spurs fans will be hoping that it is not at the expense of Eriksen.
