Report: Spurs face competition from Manchester United for Benfica star

Tottenham Hotspur look set to dip into the transfer market this summer after not spending a penny in the last two transfer windows.

While there is still uncertainty over the future of Toby Alderweireld due to his precarious contract situation which could see him sold for just £25million before the start of the new season due to a staggering transfer release clause (Guardian).

Spurs have been linked with a host of potential replacements, including Benfica defender Ruben Dias (Daily Star).

According to the report, Manchester United have now turned their attention back to signing the 22-year-old after being priced out of a move for Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly, with the Serie A side demanding £150million to let him leave.

Dias has impressed during Benfica’s title-winning campaign in Portugal which also saw him scoop the league’s Young Player of the Year award in the previous season.

The Sun recently reported that Benfica have set a £52million transfer valuation on the head of the 6ft 1in central defender who is under contract until 2023.

Opinion

While Dias is regarded as one of Europe’s brightest defensive talents, Spurs already have the perfect player in Toby Alderweireld at the club. Daniel Levy should look to offer Alderweireld the contract he deserves.

Losing Alderweireld for £25m and replacing him at double the cost for a player who is unproven in the Premier League represents a significant risk.
