Report: Spurs had £33.5m bid rejected for Lucas Paqueta in January – Still potential PL destination

According to French outlet L’Equipe, both Tottenham and Manchester City are potential destinations for Lyon midfielder Lucas Paqueta.

Paqueta has combined 20 assists with 13 goals in 76 appearances for the French giants  (Transfermarkt). However, as previously reported by Lequipe, the 24-year-old is said to be seeking a departure this summer.

Speaking after a 2-0 friendly victory over Feyenoord, Lyon’s recruitment chief Bruno Cheyrou admitted that financial considerations had to be made when considering outgoing transfers this summer and when asked specifically about Paqueta, he replied: “We are prepared for every eventuality” (Daily Mail).

Both Arsenal and Newcastle United have previously been credited with an interest in the Brazilian international (Media Foot and L’Equipe), however, this latest report claims the player is not interested in a move to either of the aforementioned teams (L’Equipe).

If a Premier League move is deemed the priority, then Paqueta is said to be more likely to join Champions League hopefuls Man City or Spurs.

L’Equipe report that Spurs even made an approach for Paqueta in January, but their offer in the region of £33.5 million fell short of Lyon’s expectations.

Spurs Web Opinion

With continued whispers among the Spurs faithful that Antonio Conte wants to add an attacking midfielder to bolster his attacking options, I think Paqueta could be a shrewd buy.

He would allow Conte to seamlessly switch to a 3-5-2 formation and would provide the creative flair needed to unlock stubborn defences.
