Report: Spurs monitoring contract situation to trigger €30m transfer release clause

To say that the Tottenham Hotspur transfer rumour mill is now in full flow would be something of an understatement.

The club have been linked with dozens of names over the past few weeks with Mauricio Pochettino set to bolster his squad after two transfer windows of complete inactivity.

One player who has been rumoured to be on the radar of Tottenham is Benfica youngster Jota.

Portuguese newspaper Record, reported last month that Spurs have already made approaches to winger about a summer move to North London.

Benfica are keen to tie the 18-year-old to a new deal to rid his current contract of the €30m transfer release clause.

Today’s edition of Record claims that Benfica are trying to increase his current salary by four-fold which may sound a significant amount, but does not represent a huge uplift as he is currently on an academy player’s contract.

The report claims that both Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich are keeping tabs on the situation but neither club are yet to make a formal approach.

Jota spent the majority of the season with Benfica’s B team and scored eight goals whilst providing eight assists in 20 games.
